Widener University Announces Winners of Third Annual High School Leadership Awards
Widener University, one of the nation's premier universities for civic engagement and applied leadership, in partnership with WCAU-TV NBC10, today announced the winners of the Widener University High School Leadership Awards. In its third year, the program recognized 134 students from high schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware who demonstrate courage and leadership within their communities.
Students were selected for their abilities to stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools. Among the winners selected, the Widener University High School Leadership Awards recognized students who:
aEUR? Coordinated fundraising efforts to benefit a horse farm that provides a day program to adults with developmental disabilities
aEUR? Founded a group that promotes safe teen driving and raises awareness about the dangers of distracted driving
aEUR? Traveled to Haiti to live with local families and help construct schools for small Haitian towns
aEUR? Raised and trained guide dogs to serve the blind
"The turnout of nominations this year was remarkable and the level of civic engagement among the winners is truly inspiring," said Widener University President James T. Harris III. "Our mission at Widener is deeply rooted in service, leadership and community, making this program extremely special to the university. The winners are the next generation of leaders in our area and I look forward to personally meeting all of them at the awards ceremony."
Winners are invited to a celebratory breakfast at the National Constitution Center on March 20, as well as a leadership conference at Widener University in fall 2014. Most notably, winners will receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years should they enroll at Widener University for undergraduate studies.

Coastal Carolina University honors December 2013 graduates
Some 515 students were eligible for degrees at Coastal Carolina University's commencement exercises on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the HTC Center.
Michael F. Clayton, recognized as one of the top intellectual property attorneys in the nation, was the speaker. He received the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, during the event. He urged graduates to balance their drive for commercial success with a goal to serve others.

Widener Law announces Delaware campus graduates
Widener Law recently held commencement exercises for its 38th graduating class on its campus in Wilmington, Del. The ceremony, held Saturday, May 19, featured an address by U.S. Sen. Christopher Coons of Delaware.
Coons told the 310 Delaware-campus graduates there is no limit to what they can do with the skills they've gained at Widener. Each day he recites the Pledge of Allegiance in the U.S. Senate, Coons said, he listens intently as the final line is uttered.
"Never forget that we pledge, as a nation, liberty and justice for all," he said. "You have an opportunity. You have the skills to add to justice around the world."

Lebanon Valley College Students Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity for Spring Break
Area students worked with 25 other Lebanon Valley College students to help families obtain simple, decent and affordable housing during spring break by working with Habitat for Humanity in Smithville, Miss. The students are participants in Habitat's national alternative break program, Collegiate Challenge.
"The service to which these students have dedicated themselves is nothing short of inspirational," said Rev. Paul Fullmer, LVC's Chaplain and director of community service and volunteerism. "They boarded a bus at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morningaEUR"just 12 hours after the beginning of spring breakaEUR"and returned to campus just 12 hours before classes begin again! So their entire break was spent in service to people impacted by the tornado which recently stuck Mississippi."
